Newsletter #5
We want this to be the number one newsletter for women's and girls' sport in the UK. But, we need your help.
We are looking for freelance female writers who love UK women's football to contribute to this newsletter. The Euros are coming this summer so you'll be busy!
If this is you, get in touch (mailto:hello@wearegirlsinsport.com?subject=Hear%20my%20story) . And if you know the right person, forward this email.
Thanks!
Rugby Union
The second weekend of the Six Nations saw England dominate again. As out and out favourites, they are living up to the hype, playing quality rugby with tries aplenty. This weekend they played Wales at the Principality Stadium, winning 67-12. There were numerous try scorers with Ellie Kildunne scoring a hat-trick on her 50th appearance.
This was a record-breaking event with the largest ever attendance for a standalone women's sporting event in Wales - 21,186!
France are fighting for second place in the 6 Nations and continued their unbeaten run with a win over Scotland. Half-time score was 13-7 to the Gallic hosts in La Rochelle but in the second half they pulled away. Scotland try scorers were Emma Orr and Elis Martin with Helen Nelson as kicker managing two from three. Final score 38-15.
Ireland recovered from last week's loss to France by emphatically beating Italy away, 12-54. They were organised and disciplined, demonstrating why they deserve to be in the top half of the table.
Rugby in the media:
This Tiktok (https://vm.tiktok.com/ZNd8q9G9Y/) has caused controversy. Should Wales's Jasmine Joyce-Butchers have been dancing with England and fellow Bristol Bear's Sarah Bern after such a heavy loss? What do you think?
Loving this paywall-free article (https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2025/mar/31/ruby-tui-new-zealand-rugby-union-interview) in The Guardian from New Zealand rugby's Ruby Tui on her rugby story. TW - alcoholism and domestic abuse.
Golf
As the weather warms up, golf comes into the spotlight and next week we may see British success in the shape of Lottie Woad and Patience Rhodes at Augusta, home of the iconic Masters Golf Tournament. Lottie and Patience will play in the Augusta National Women's Amateur competition which Lottie won last year. Can she do it again? The tournament starts on 2 April.
British professional Charley Hull was in the running for this weekend's Ford Championship tournament in Arizona but didn't breakthrough on the last day. You can read our interview with Charley Hull on why girls should play golf here (https://www.wearegirlsinsport.com/blog/girlsandgolf?rq=charley%20) .
In other news...
Netball - London Pulse have struck and are top of the Netball Super League, beating current champions Loughborough Lightening on the way. Nottingham Forest's Rolene Streutker is the league's Super Shot superstar shooting 12 in their game against Cardiff Dragons.
Cricket - Heather Knight's innings at England cricket are over as are coach Jon Lewis's. Who will take over? Ex-captain and now cricket coach Charlotte Edwards has been suggested as coach and as for captain, we think it'll be Nat Sciver-Brunt, but Wisden (https://www.wisden.com/cricket-news/the-knight-replacements-who-will-be-the-next-england-womens-captain) has other ideas too...
Badminton - Scot Kirsty Gilmour was penalised with a yellow card for a longer-than-allowed bathroom break to deal with her period at the All England Open. The break caused a delay but the Badminton World Federation has overturned the yellow card saying that officials applied the rules incorrectly. Menstruation continues to be a pain for women in sport.
Who shall we feature next?
We had a great conversation with 'Squad Safe' author, Joanna Gamper Cuthbert, cheer and safeguarding supremo, last week at our free webinar. Attendees from around the world heard Joey talk about success and what that means in sport, why gym and club culture is crucial as well as many other important topics around safeguarding.
We're grateful to our event sponsors WePlay (https://weplay.co/work/) . They are keen advocates for women's and girls' sport and we love that they've chosen We are Girls in Sport for investment! Thank you Team WePlay.
