Newsletter #6 - Full of Woad
Welcome to this edition of WAGIS Weekly, the newsletter for women and girls in sport, written by women and girls in sport.
Our 'Podium Places' this week are:
Listening to: Newsletter contributor and motor sports expert Scarlett Archer's fab podcast 'Top of the Grid'
Watching: 'Bump in the Road' about Red Roses' Abbie Ward return to rugby after having her daughter. Teaser here but it can be found on Sky Sports, ITVX and RugbyPass TV.
Reading: 'I'm that Girl' by US gymnast Jordan Chiles.
Last post we liked on socials: Paige Bueckers of March Madness winners UConn giving excellent advice.
Golf
GB's Lottie Woad wasn't able to defend her title at the Augusta National Women's Amateur competition last week, finishing third with nine under par. She blamed a wrong club choice on the tenth. Patience Rhodes didn't make the cut (she didn't qualify into the final two days of play).
Cricket
If you read last week's newsletter you'll have seen that our top tip Charlotte Edwards has in fact been appointed the England women's team new cricket coach. Edwards won 5 Ashes Series as well as the 20 and 50 over World Cups with England and has been an impressive coach in India and England since then
We're still waiting to hear who the new England captain will be...
Football
New signing - could it be you?! We're looking for a contributor to join the team and with the Euros coming up, we want a fresh new football fan to write about all the home nations.
You need to be a sucker for all things soccer and have a passion for writing clearly, concisely and with punch. Email us (hello@wearegirlsinsport.com) to hear more about your signing fee and what's involved!
Meanwhile, on the pitch the Women's Nations League. Who's flying high and who's crashing out?
England vs Belgium: England continued with their positive build-up to this year's Euros, beating Belgium 5-0 and moving to the top of their Nations League group.
Scorers: Lucy Bronze, Millie Bright, Aggie Beever-Jones, Jess Park and Keira Walsh. Walsh's first international goal to seal the win.
Scotland vs Austria: Scotland lost 1-0 and face Germany next in their group stage fixture on Tuesday.
Wales vs Denmark: Wales lost 1-2 to Denmark but don't let the score deceive you. Wales played well and Denmark are ranked higher. Tears for Welsh scorer Ceri Holland as she was stretchered off in the dying minutes of the game. Let's hope she's up and running in time for the Euros.
Romania vs Northern Ireland: This ended in a 1-1 draw leaving Northern Ireland in second place in their group B1. Romania remain bottom of the group, a frustrating draw for NI manager Tanya Oxtoby:
"We know that second-half performance wasn't good enough, and we'll learn from it and get better."
Quote of the week
