Newsletter #7

Hey there ...

Welcome to this edition of the WAGIS Weekly (yes/no? Let us know whether you like the name.)

We're focusing on football, rugby and our 'ICYMI', introducing our new tennis writer and a bonus piece from Scarlett Archer. But first, our Podium Places.

This week's Podium Places (in no particular order, all winners of course)

Listening to: Clare Williams of the Williams F1 team on High Performance podcast.

Reading: ADHD in Sport: Strategies for Success by Dr Josephine Perry. Dr Perry is a friend of We are Girls in Sport and she did an Instalive with us a few years ago. This book feels so needed and is a great read.

Last post we liked on socials: We love BTS posts like this one! Don't forget to tag us in yours like Bishop's Stortford Rugby Club did here.

Tennis

Introducing another new contributor to the newsletter - please welcome Amelie Brooks. This British tennis player isn't just talking the talk—she's literally competing on court THIS WEEK! You can read her work here and here, but don't be fooled by her work, this woman wants to make it on the court!

As a serious competitor who lives and breathes the women's tour, her insights are about to be game-changing, especially with the major tournaments right around the corner.

Motor racing

Our brilliant contributor Scarlett Archer has put pen to paper again to give us her round up of the women making it in motor racing in 2025. Read her round up here.

Football

If you're missing watching your local team play then don't worry. The international break continues for the home nations as they compete in the UEFA Nations League.

Sweden vs Wales: If you check out the stats from this match-up, just remember that Wales held Sweden to a 1-1 draw which is AMAZING given Sweden's possession and attempts on goal. Sweden top their group and Wales are bottom despite Hannah Cain's goal in this game.

Belgium vs England: After success last week against Belgium, the return fixture was not so glorious.

On home turf, Belgium scored three goals in 30 minutes, showing gaps in the Lionesses defence and putting that 5-0 defeat well and truly behind them.

Beth Mead stepped up to slot in a penalty but it was 19 year old Michelle Agyemang who roared for England in the second half. The England first-timer showed great poise as she scored on only her second touch of the night.

Germany vs Scotland: Caroline Weir capitalised on a German defensive error to score Scotland's only goal of the night and start the goal tally in their 6-1 defeat.

It was a small glimmer of joy across two big defeats to the European heavyweights who rank third in FIFA rankings.

Northern Ireland vs Romania: Another Weir took the lead in this game (See Scotland game above if you skipped it!) when Kascie Weir scored after just eight minutes.

In a match full of subs and yellow cards, it was great to see Northern Ireland take the win. 1-0 to our pals across the Irish Sea.

Rugby - 6 Nations in brief

Ireland 5–49 England

England extended their dominance with a commanding second-half performance, scoring six unanswered tries after a narrow 7–5 halftime lead. As you'd expect, they top the pack with an 88 point advantage.

Scotland 17–25 Italy

Italy secured their first win of the tournament, overcoming Scotland with two tries from Muzzo and strong contributions from substitutes.

France 42–12 Wales

France dominated Wales, with Emilie Boulard scoring two tries in a decisive victory.

Those Red Roses are looking as though they're going to peak at the right time for the Rugby World Cup this autumn with France hot on their heels.

ICYMI

Archery - Brit Ella Gibson has been the world number one for 1000 (yes a THOUSAND) days in compound archery. Congratulations Ella!

Olympics - For the first time, there will be more female competitors than male at the next Olympics. LA28 has made some changes which you can read about here.

Netball - London Pulse continue to dominate with

Manchester Thunder in second, three points behind. Cardiff Dragons and Birmingham Panthers need to catch up on games.

Quote of the week

In archery, there are all shapes and sizes, and you wear what you like so there’s no need to feel body conscious which makes it a great sport for girls.
